T-Rav and The Sledd

Yesterday I fished with my Man T-Rav and his buddy Sledd. We got some major stormage the night before and I was a little worried the river would reflect it. Fortunately the river looked good. Real good. We started the morning off doing some nymphing and put the hurt on them! Caught a couple of nice browns and tons of bows. At lunch we moved the ship to an upper river ramp and decided to take advantage of some clouds. We got out the meat sticks and started pushing water. We had some awesome action. Fish were moving off the banks and aggressively swinging at our flies. We ended up catching several nice fish but truly the excitement came from watching these fish get so angry at our flies!

Cliff and Mandy Part II

Yesterday I took Cliff and Mandy back out for day two of fishing. We had pretty similar conditions as Friday so we started off with a similar plan. Catch a few fish on nymphs and get the monkey off our back, then move to streamers. The Nymph bite started off pretty strong and so we decided to quickly move into chucking meat in hopes to turn another "PB". We had a few good whacks and some good chases. Landed a couple but the bite slowed down. We then picked the nymphs back up and Mandy straight up dominated with three awesome rainbows back to back casts! The water finally started climbing up on us so we made the switch back to streamers. It was kinda slow, the sun had crept back out the fish were being shy. I told them to make a few more casts before we had to make the trip back to the ramp and BAM! Cliff hooked up with yet another "PB" as his last cast! It was a great way to wrap up another stellar couple of days fly fishing on the Little Red River!

A Morning in the Hyde

Last week Mickey and I went out for a few hours in his Hyde. It was a great morning on the river with a good friend. We turned a few big boys but mostly just goofed around. It was nice to row around the drifter for a change. I wish I had a big fish pic to share with ya'll but this is all I got!

Friday I fished with Cliff and Mandy Wright. We started off the day working some big nymphs on one of my favorite sections of the river. The first fish on the line was a 20+ inch brown that broke off right at the boat. We landed several more fish but had to work hard for them. We decided to chuck some streamers in search of a new "PB" ( personal best). By the End of the day we had reached that goal for both of them. It was really cool watching their casts get better and better and getting them hooked on the excitement of streamer fishing!

The Little Red River has some amazing fish to offer anglers. It has a completely self sustaining wild brown trout population. It also has some incredible hulk-ish rainbows as well if you just dig your heels in. This is a rainbow caught this fall with a mangled monster kipe!

If you've read my blog before most of ya'll know I am a streamer addict. I love everything about it. I love to tie big Nasty flies, I love to work my tail off for that chase, the miss, the eats. Everything about it fires me up. Most of the time the pay off is worth all of the casts even if the fish isn't a monster. This is a photo of a brown that my boy Hays caught last time we fished together. It wasn't a monster fish but it was a beautiful brown trout and he ate a sex dungeon that Hays's tied. He forced the fish to come out of its hole on a bright and sunny day and eat, and that's just cool. Hope you enjoy this funky town photo Hays sent me!

The new issue of Southern Culture on the Fly came live yesterday. Thew new "Ezine" is stellar. Some great photos of Pappa Rouse and Me doing our thing on the river, Some cool shots of Fat possum Holler, and bunches of other sick stuff too. Make sure you peep that "legs for days" fly. My Man Mike!

Yesterday I got to fish with my man Mike. Water was running a little over one generator. We decided to start off the morning nymphing. The bite was steady at first but tapered down. After a few fly changes we still had a hard time getting them turned on. We then decided to search for some browns with the meat sticks. The cloud cover and water flow were perfect! The bite was on fire! We saw probably 7 or 8 solid browns try to eat and made connection with a couple good ones to turn the day into a pretty sweet day of trout fishing!

Yesterday I had the chance to fish with a new sport, which is always fun. Wallace has been fly fishing for a while but wanted to learn some new techniques. Specifically streamer fishing. We set out with learning as the main goal. We got the cast down and got after it. We got a few rainbows, and had a couple of good browns follow it but they just wouldn't commit. We ended up pegging this nice brown to make it all worth it. We then decided to play a number game and just bend the rod for a while. The nymph bite was pretty strong. With the high flows we certainly had to work for them but that's not a bad thing!

Last Sunday I got the chance to fish with a good client of mine, Norm. It was a super fun day. Norm got things going with some pancakes and bacon. Any morning that starts with pancakes and bacon is a good day! Water was fairly high but the weather was pretty decent. We decided to stay committed to chucking streamers looking for a lurker. We ended up catching quite a few fish in the 16-17 inch range. We had some serious swipes of larger fish and had a super solid eat from a good 21-22 incher but he managed to spit the hook. We did not find the monster we set out looking for but we did have a great time, ate good food, and got some good tugs from some sweet brown trout!

Thursday afternoon I got the pleasure of fishing with a couple of new clients John and Jimbo. The water was still running a solid 7,000 cfs but the air temp was in the 60's so they couldn't pass up the chance to do a little trout fishing. We started off catching the fire out of some rainbows but the boys wanted to look for a brown. We found a few. We even had a few super solid fish school us. It was a pretty sweet day to be on the Little Red River!

Sow Buggin'

So on The Little Red River one of the most important bugs to have in your box is truly the sow bug. Ive caught many extremely large fish on the little juicy protein nuggets. The sow bug holds his magic all year long. Ive seen many different patterns that people call a Sow bug, but very few actually look like a Sow bug and work like a true Sow bug pattern. When I first started guiding for Jamie he held great pride in his Sow Bug. He forced me to study the actual bug and tie up varieties of my own, after many efforts I was finally able to come up with the perfect match. Now after several year of cranking out thousands of sow bugs from behind the vice Pappa Rouse leaked another one of his secret stash flies to Orvis. The Rouse's JDUB Sow bug. I'm not going to tell you that you cant find any other sow bugs patterns out there that work but this fly was passed down to Jamie 18 years ago when first started guiding. He has now perfected it into the perfect Little Red River sow bug and I can assure if it is fished correctly it is a deadly dude!

This might just possibly be the first brown trout caught in 2012. This fish was caught and released on Jan 1st at about 8:30 am....who knows if it was actually the first one caught but it I bet it was on the Little Red River at least! Hope this fish brings me and my sports a lot of brown trout voodoo for 2012!

Over the past week I've had the chance to go fish with my man Hays from Jackson Ms. When we get the chance to fish together we typically just throw big meat at the big boys but it seems as if the past week or so we have had such a good bite on nymphs we decided to get down and dirty with them a little as well. We turned and landed some nice fish on streamers too. All on flies that we have just been experimenting with at the vice and needed some good R&D time with. Despite the fact it has been uber windy and super cold we buckled down and got after it! Here are a few of the fish we were rewarded with! Cheers to the new year!

So the fun just keeps on going. The river has remained at a pretty constant flow...BIG. The fishing has also remained awesome. Yesterday I got the chance to take out a good client and friend of JRFFA. Dr. Usdan and his friend Allen. It was Allen's first time to fly fish but rest assured he had no troubles catching on. We landed crazy amounts of solid browns. I think we may have only landed 4 rainbows yesterday two of which were over 16 inches. I think the Doc quit counting at 40 and that was before lunch! Poodle Magic

So If you've read my blog before you probably know that I love to fish streamers. Jamie was on the front edge of this streamers revolution. He was chucking lead lines and big flies long before it was in every fly fishing magazine. One day He took me out and a buddy out and was pulling big browns off the banks in September and it just blew my gourd! Ever since then Ive been hooked. Anyways This fall many a big fish were taken on streamers of all types but one fly in particular seemed to make the magic happen the most. That was Rouse's own Poodle. We've always kind of like to keep our hot flies sneaky but last year Jamie leaked this fly to Orvis and now its available in three colors to everyone. Winter streamer fishing can be the best of the year if the flows are right. So don't be afraid to go ahead stock up on them!

Well its Christmas Eve! Amy, Caroline, and I went out to break in the new boat for a test drive today...We just made a couple of drifts. Maybe 4 or 5, and Amy had 4 fish on and landed 3 of them! Afterwards Caroline got cold so we headed in for the ramp. The new boat rides smooth....real smooth. I'll post some pics soon. Anyways, I was just browsing some of the blogs I like to read and stole this poem from Moldy Chum. It's just a silly little Christmas poem I thought I would re post!
Twas the night before Christmas when down by the stream

The busy fall season is starting to slow down...at least for a few days. I've taken some time off to celebrate the holidays with the family. It's been nice to come off the daily grind for a while. Some exciting stuff took place on the river this past year. We had fairly awesome fishing all year. We started off last spring with some stellar march brown and caddis hatches. Eased through summer with some sweet days catching fish on hoppers and some trip to the "fork" and dry run creek crushing fish on cicadas. The fall season was silly. Streamer bite was awesome as well as nymphing. We had low water days of sight casting to monster browns, and days of super high water boating over 60 browns a day. The boys from Southern Culture on the Fly came down to do a story and get some bent rods. I posted about these guys last week. Follow that link and it will take you to their website and blog. Today I worked a group trip with fellow guide Greg. It was a father son trip. Jamie took the two fathers yesterday and Greg guided the two boys. Today I guided the two boys and Greg guided the dads. It was a pretty cool day. Greg packed us chili dogs and Frito pie for lunch and we bundled up to face the cold! The boys did great. Jack seemed to have his voodoo right and landed several super nice fish. Here are a couple of his hero shots!

Yesterday I fished with my brother-n-law Lewis and his friend Danny. Same story as it has been for a while now...The fishing on the Little Red River is kicking serious tail, the water is seriously high and the boys absolutely laid the smack down on some serious brown trout! It was awesome to get to spend some time with Lewis and getting to know Danny Better. The style of fishing we had going on was completely new to the both of them and they adapted well. Here are a couple of the grip-n-grins from the day!

Friday I got the chance to guide some super cool dudes Zach and Matt. They are involved with the mag. Vertical. Its a publication out of NW Ar. So they brought along Jacob. They had no clue what to expect with over 6,500 cfs pumping. They crushed it. We were caught probably 60 browns. Most of them taped out between 16-20 inches with a couple over that mark. It was unreal. Anyways we had a killler time on water! Hopefully we will see some of Jacobs stellar photo's in an issue to come soon!

Last week the boys from Southern Culture On The Fly came down to get a little bit of Jamie Rouse Fly Fishing Adventures in their life. Jamie and I guided them for two days in the high water and had a killer time. Steve and Dave kicked some serious tail on the water. We caught crazy numbers of solid fish. So today was the first day of two unit water around the clock, I knew it was coming but just was not expecting it to be this week.I got the pleasure of fishing with Mike and Richard. I guided Mike back earlier this fall. Mike grew up in the sport and has a solid stick on him. Richard his pal from Texas had never done any fly fishing. Today certainly had it challenges in store for us but the guys did great and we landed some good number of browns including a couple of really solid fish!

Today I got the chance to fish with Tom and Brad Walsh. I've fished with Brad and his dad before but it was my first time to fish with Tom. The boys lit it up out there. Our first hook up was a double and the boys had on both 18 inch browns. That started the fire in the guys. It was a blast watching the brotherly competition. Although the highlight of the day to me was the last double of the day. We got both fish scooped in the net, a photo took and both fish released. Certainly probably a memory that will stay with these guys forever!

Yesterday I got the pleasure of fishing with John Solo. Don't get me wrong. Its always fun to have two guys in the boat but fishing a single is really my favorite. You can climb out of the boat and fish sneaky spots that you cant with two, Conversation becomes more personal, and its just down right fun! Anyways John crushed them yesterday. Maiden and The Farns

Friday was Farnsworth's last day to fish with me, and he invited another great client of mine John Maiden. It was a fun group trip that I worked with Tony. It was cold and the water was high but the guys stepped up there game and did great, both guys caught several solid browns each. It seemed as if they came in waves. We would catch several nice fish back to back then nothing. Which I never mind working hard for some good fish, makes you appreciate them that much more!

So I've been fishing my man Farns for the past few days. Today I got the pleasure of fishing with him and Jimbo. Water was lower this morning than it has been as of late and we took the opportunity to do some wading. The rainbow fishing was off the charts good. As the water rose we jumped in the boats to do some drifting and pounded tons more fish. Robert and Jimbo both landed handfuls of good browns and the Farns got himself a new personal best!

Today I fished with the Farns again. Papa Rouse and I ran a group trip and Jamie took Jimbo. Fishing was awesome. We had a great water schedule and did some serious work on the fish. Both guys caught some seriously nice fish. Roberts best two fish were his first fish of the morning and the last fish of the day! The morning started off cool still with snow on the banks and made for a beautiful back drop.

Today I fished with my man Farnsworth. It was suppose to be him and one of his clients but his guy had to bail. Weather was cold and snowy. Water was up and down and kinda off color in the a.m but...Fishing was awesome! We saw one other angler the whole day and we absolutely crushed brown trout! We waded, we drifted, we chucked streamers, we nymphed. We covered all the basis today, We even ate hot steak sandwiches on the riverbank! I would have to say though one of my favorite parts about today was when Robert started rowing and let me catch some brown trout! Life is good on the river when your with good friends!

Saturday I fished with my man Doctor Albright and a resident of his named nick. Nick had only fly fished one other time several months ago with Jamie. We came out of the launch guns a blazing picking on some nice fish. Nick landed this first brown but Doc. quickly followed suit landing several nice ones himself. Two units were ripping down the river and certainly we had to work hard for every fish we landed. Nick also ended this day with this beautiful fish to hand!

Last week I got a chance to fish with Tyler. It was our first time to fish together and we were both pretty pumped up. The Corp was bouncing the water from 2 units to 1 and back to 2. It was weird water to fish but we dialed it in and got down and dirty with them. Tyler wanted to pursue some browns and was interested in learning some new techniques. He had a good rod on him so we got out the big guns. Not only did he catch the best brown trout he's caught yet, he caught 3 of the biggest browns he'd ever caught! We had countless monster fish eat and swipe the fly. It was flat out crazy! What a stellar day to be chucking streamers on the Little Red River!

High Water Group Trippin!

Yesterday Papa Rouse and I ran a group with some our of regular clients. I had Kent and Eddie in my boat and Jamie had Allen and Chuck. The water was blowing 6800 cfs. BIG water. The guys have fished with us before and new we could get the job done, so we geared up and hit the water. The fishing was great. We caught mostly browns and several really good ones! Despite the cold and water, the guys put their skills to the test and did great! We can't control the water, but we can adjust our rigs!

Sunday I took my man Norm back out for a little trout action. We had a major cold front moving in on us and the trout seemed to be reacting a little strange. The morning was good though. We found some fish willing to feed and made it happen. We fished a variety of styles including swinging soft hackles and stripping streamers along with your standard nymphs. We waded and we drifted. Norm caught several nice browns in the 16-18 march and gobs of decent rainbows. We spent some time wading and sight casting to larger trout. We had a solid two footer on but he managed to take a huge jump and bust us off. Despite the fact we didn't land him, it was a awesome sight to see! Norm will be back in 10 days or so to get his revenge!

A Farnsworth Family Adventure

Saturday I guided Farnsworth and his kids.This is now become the annual Thanksgiving weekend for him and his family! It's always a blast and despite the weather, Robert was determined to make this year no different. I started of with Miles and Duval, then we swapped them out for Ansley. The conditions for teaching kids was less than perfect. Cold, rainy, and high water. The kids bundled up and did great. The goal for the day was to put a brown in each kids hand and it was a mission accomplished! Here are some of the great photos we got of some brown trout action!

Last week, Tony and I ran a group trip with our good friend and client Logan. I fished Logan and his youngest son John. The bite was great we got into loads of good rainbows and had a great time. John is only 10 and really held his own in the boat. We packed a big family style lunch and picnicked on the high ground. We did our best to fish the boats together to keep the siblings in ear's distance of each other so the sibling banter could take place. It was certainly an awesome day for the family to make some good memories and catch some fish! Here is a photo with Logo with a lengthy rainbow!

Dry Run Action

Today I took out my Little Buddy Will Portera and His dad Greg for some Dry Run Creek Action. The Little Red was high and muddy and I just did not think it would be great for these guys. So we hit the creek and she was Dynamite for us! Will just picked on them! He landed probably a 100 fish! Browns, cutthroats, and rainbows! Will learned to high stick nymph and got pretty dang good at it! Here are just a couple of the awesome fish my man Will landed!

Yesterday I fished with my man Stewart and " The Farns". The night before we got an absolute torrential down power, and the river was a muddy muddy mess. We started the day off right with some good ole Rustic inn for breakfast. Then we dug into the mud and made some magic happen. We landed probably 17 or 18 fish between 18-22 inches. Several rainbows and this Monster brown that Stewart thumped! All things considered it was a pretty incredible day of trout fishing even if the water was the color of chocolate milk!

So today I guided just Dennis. Dave had to head home to Missouri. We got a pretty good pounding with rain last night and the river was pretty off color today. I've got a spot that has been pretty good to me this year for finding some gargantuan rainbows and today she did not disappoint me. We hooked a couple of fish of equal caliber but we couldn't land them. I guess the third time was the charm! This fish for sure left us in all smiles all day!

Yesterday I got the chance to guide two bothers who rendezvoused in Arkansas for a little fly fishing trip. Both guys are fairly new to the sport, but eager to learn. We started of the morning catching lots of fish. The river was low and we stuck to wading. As the day progressed they started to get buck fever and wanted to find a brown. Mickey's Monster

One day last week I ran a group trip with Papa Rouse and Mickey. We had 4 kids from the St. George's Angling society in Memphis, plus Logan and David ( the chaperones). It was an awesome time. All the kids caught lots of fish and learned a ton. We did a huge lunch family style on the bank and just enjoyed the awesome day. Mickey guided this young man into this monster. Unfortunately my picture is not the best. I kind of got a side shot because we wanted to get this fish back into the water asap! Enjoy!

So I've guided my man Ryan Mahoney several times now. Last week he brought his pops down from the North East to do a little fishing. The water was low and kinda slim for drifting but we managed to squeeze a few drifts out. Ryan's first fish on of the morning was a 28-30 fish. This thing was a monster! We had him on for quite a while and he ended up busting us off, right at the boat! We did end up catching tons more trout and had an awesome day despite experiencing "the big one got away". I guess that's what keeps us coming back!

Yesterday I guided my man Norm and his buddy David. Fishing was great. We switched it up a bit and fished some streamers as well as drug some nymphs around. We caught lots of fish both ways. Plenty of feisty rainbows as well as some good browns. Fish of the day award goes to Norm for this hog he pulled out while jerking a huge black streamer! Dave picked off this brown swinging a soft hackle! All in all it was a pretty stellar day fishing on the Little Red River with good people!

A day Off

So yes on my days off, I like to fish. Ive been on the water almost every day for the past 23 days but when the storms came in and my client for the day cancelled I just had to jump on the chance to go fish for some piggy rainbows. I convinced Amy to wader up and go play in the rain. Fishing was great. This fatty rainbow was just one of the many thumpers caught. I landed several fish around 18 inches, a couple 20-21 inch fish. Of course the biggest one of the day got away, but Amy and I saw him and he was big! Amy Ended up catching her a lengthy hen right before we left to be the icing on the cake!

Buck Fever

So my man Henry came over to Arkansas with one thing on his mind, a big brown trout. I was a little skeptical of the conditions. They have not run any water in several days and the river is low, low, low. We dug in and found a few sneaky spots and caught some great fish. Henry got him an awesome brown. Right before lunch we had another one spotted and he let me catch one! That does not happen to often and it was a great treat for me! The afternoon winds eventually blew us off the water but only after a fantastic day of sight casting to some awesome fish!

Last week, I got the chance to fish with Doc and Travis. As always these guys are awesome to fish with! They love life and just are such a blast to be around. We started off doing a little wading and just beat up on the fish. Doc scored several on streamers while, Travis picked on the swinging soft hackles! Once the water started to rise we jumped and the boat and covered some water! The bite was on and off but when it was on, it was awesome! We had some nice fish chase our streamers and some awesome eats that were just super exciting!

Today I fished with Robert and Gene. After the day Farnsy and I had yesterday I was nervous about trying to give him another stellar day! We got swamped with rain last night and the river was a muddy mess today. We decided to dig our heals in and try them anyways. The pay off was great. We caught several awesome fish over twenty inches! As the water dropped out we did some sight casting with soft hackles and midges. Man nothing is more satisfying than making that perfect cast, making the good mend to set the drift up and BAM have the fish open his mouth and eat your fly! Man despite the muddy water and harsh winds my guys today persevered and we scored some trophy trout! Life is Good!

Today I fished with my man Robert Farnsworth, aka " The Farns" We decided to search for a big fish so we started off the morning ripping big flies. We caught several nice rainbows and several Decent browns. After lunch we made a move to a different spot to try some other stuff. We caught another nice fish on streamers and plucked a few off on soft hackles by sight casting to them. It was an epic afternoon on the river with probably 6 more fish over 18 inches. The fish of the day came at the very end of the day and is Farnsworth's new personal best!

Last Saturday I got to fish with some great Clients of mine Ben and Steve Weir. The River was an absolute zoo. It seamed as if all the Yahoo's were out and about. It didn't help that water was extremely low. After we found a place to fish boats continued to almost run us over. We decided to try and head somewhere away from the crowds. We found some places all to ourselves and absolutely crushed it! We caught fish after fish and it shook out to be an awesome day. Steve caught This solid rainbow swinging soft hackles and Ben caught this nice brown stripping a streamer.

A few days ago I took out a new client, Phil Lightfoot. Phil really wanted to catch a big fish. After catching a few fish on nymphs, I decided to teach Phil a few new techniques and teach him how to chuck and duck. In a few short drifts he had fish chasing his fly and whacking him left and right! He caught several solid browns but this one certainly took the cake! It was just another awesome day in paradise on the Little Red River!

Yesterday I had the pleasure of Fishing with Jack and Doug. It was the first time I had ever fished with these guys. Conditions in the sky were perfect for streamers, low light and super cloudy! Our only drawback was it was screaming 30 mph winds almost constantly! This style of fishing was new to the guys but they buckled down and did great. We caught quite a few nice browns and several feisty rainbows! Here are a couple of the nicer fish that Jack brought to the boat!

Fall is always one of my favorite times on the river. The leaves are changing, the browns are starting to move and they feed ferociously. Chucking streamers is typically my favorite way to fish. I love the hunt, the chases, the eats, and even love the misses! There is just nothing more exciting than to know I am forcing the fish to come out of his comfort zone and eat out of aggression! It just fires me up. Loads of fish are chasing flies right now. I took Rich out who is my mate from across the pond and we did some serious chuck and duck fishing. We also pinged a few nice fish on nymphs as well to break up the day. Here are a couple of the nicer fish Rich caught!

As you all know, I am crazy about father-son trips. Last week, I had the pleasure taking Jock and Spencer fishing with their dad Tom. Tom is in his mid eighties and really held his own! After we had caught a bunch of fish we decided to look for a larger fish. Spencer and Jock chucked some streamers for a while. Spencer probably caught 6 nice browns but this one took the cake! It was a great day spending time on the water with these guys! I am looking forward to the many more fishing trips me and my pops will have together over the years!

So last week Mike and Suzie Bowen came to sore lip a few fish with me. We had some weird water flow but we made it happen. We had to work hard for our fish at first but we made a move to a different section of the river and started banging some fish. Mike and Suzie have been fishing with me a few times and it seems like each time one of them catches "the biggest trout they have ever caught." So our good client Doctor Albright, came to fish with Jamie and I the past few days. Doc often brings his residents from Memphis with him to fish. Usually fellows who have never fly fished before. This time he brought Matt. Jamie took them out and waded the guys hard yesterday and crushed it! Today I took them out for a little boat fishing and it was lights out. They both got a good brown out of the day. This is the one that Matt stung!

Better Fish than the Yakima

Last week, I got the chance to fish with a couple of guys from Washington. These guys fish the Yakima pretty often and about half way through the morning, declared that our fish here on the Little Red " where better fish than they had on the Yakima" They were awesome anglers and a blast to fish with. We had pefect water for wading and blistered the fish. The guys caught tons of fiesty rainbows and Mike pulled this nice brown out from under a log swinging soft hackles

in the afternoon!

Over the past couple of days I got to fish with my partner Hays. Hays and I have caught Loads of nice fish together and chased tails all over the place. We love the rush of all fish but our favorite is the brown trout. We have not gotten to fish as much as we once did, so our game was a little off. We did manage to catch a few nice fish, and turned gobs of monster fish. Hays worked hard for this fish and nothing made me happier than to be the net guy!

Today I fished my man Will Maiden. Him and his Pops have become some awesome clients and friends. John wanted today to be all about his boy so we treated him to something special. DRY RUN CREEK. Will crushed them. He caught well over 60 fish today and probably 15 or 20 of them over 18 inches. Our ticket to success tight line, high sticking! He had several on over ten pounds!! It was nutts. It didnt hurt his ego (or mine) that we were really the only ones constantly hooked up! They brought me this awesome new net made by a mom and pop in colorado called a "stevens" and today we broke it in good. Here are just a few of the amazing trout Will brought in today! I got to spend the last day and a half with a great man named Tom Scott. Tom fished with me earlier in the summer for a couple of days for the first time. We fished all sorts of styles and caught some nice fish. We chucked streamers, swung soft hackles, midged and just did some good ole sow buggin. Yesterday afternoon the fish were a little more challening than the day before but thats ok, We still caught some nice trout, enjoyed some awesome weather and solved some of the worlds problems. So as of late it seems all I have heard about is the new Sage "One" fly rod. I have heard reviews that it is such an amazing casting machine that it will melt your face off, That this rod is the most accurate, sensitive rod ever built. I must admit Ive been dying to cast the "one". Well today I got the chance to fish with one of these rods for a while, Dont get me wrong its a super slick rod that tracks very well. Its not much of a looker but does the job very well, but...I hate to tell you folks side by side fishing the 9 foot 4wt Helios, next to the "One" I would have to say The Helios is a much smoother, sexier, sleeker, all around better casting machine. So dont let all the new hype and ads fool you folks. If you want to get down on a new rod, I would choose the Helios any day of the week.

Yesterday my man Tony and I worked a group trip for a good client of mine. I fished Ted and JP. The guys all pooled their money up for the biggest fish, most fish. All of them pretty much had very little if no fly fishing experience. They caught on great and were catching fish in no time! The competition in my boat got heated up quick and by lunch they were only a fish or two away from each other. JP ended up with the largest fish at 16 1/4 inches Ted with the most at 31 fish for the day! It was just an awesome day to be on the Little Red River!

It was windy as all get out and that made it more than a challange for any angler. The boys got locked in and hammered tons of trout. I would guess we probably caught 75 or more fish. The fish of the day was caught by Tony, it was the sassy rainbow!

Last spring Steve came to fish with me and wanted to learn how to improve his wade fishing game. When he got here they turned on 2 gens and didnt turn them off until he was gone! This time the water was low and perfect! We waded all day long and fished several differnt styles of rigs and steve crushed them! His

cast improved by 20 feet and he was just flat out deadly! It was the first day of the season Ive had my waders on and a jacket! Steve busted the chops on this brown to be the fish of the day for him!

Yesterday I took Russell up to Dry Run Creek. Russel is in the fourth grade and it was his first time to hold a fly rod, let me tell you what, the kid is fishy! He caught on quick and was roll casting like a champ. We caught mostly browns but he also caught some awesome cutties, including a few on hoppers, as well as some nice rainbows! I am telling you folks this place is super magical and if you want to get your kid hooked on fishing this is the place to do it!

I fished my buddies Clint and Woody Last week. Fishing was awesome and the weather was even better! The guys kept score and I think the final tally came to 84 fish caught and released from about 8am 3pm. It was just silly! Clint landed this nice 17incher towards the end of the day! Its always fun fishing with these guys because they just rib on each other the entire time! Life is good on the Little Red River!

Angry Hybrids

The Hybrids on Greers ferry have been just pigging out on shad on the surface. Massive schools of fish have been staying up for extended periods of time all over the place. The weather has been great for surface feeding with lots more time of low light. We have been having some days catching close to 40 fish! It should only get better over the next few weeks so get here while you can!

So I am totally a believer of the fact that everything happens for a reason, On Friday night my wife waited on a couple that she totally connected with, It just so happened they wanted to start fly fishing. So Yesterday Evening I got to spend on the river with two great people, Suzie and Mike Bowen. Mike played camera man and just soaked in the beauty of the river and Suzie Learned to Fly Fish. She caught on quick and quickly fell in love with it, She caught quite a few nice rainbows, The picture shown is one of my favorites! At the end of the evening the sun was setting and Mike literally had to pry the rod from her hands! It was a great time to be had on the Little Red catching some great fish on the fly and sharing some great company!

So Its been a super busy weekend on the Little Red River, Everyone is trying to squeeze out their last vacations before the swing of fall gets going. My Labor day guiding always involves my long time family friend Roger Cole and his family. Its a huge weekend for their crew and they throw down, cooking hunrdres of pounds of food and getting down truly southern style. Last week the Hybrid bite really started to turn on. I've had some good days in the evenings and the mornings. Jamie and I went out early one morning and just clobber-dogged them. Acres of busting fish and at times

Yesterday I fished Ryan and Conor. Conor had held a fly rod one other time and Ryan had a little bit more experience under his belt. The conditions again were awesome, The river was crowded but we were able to keep our distance from the other boats and stayed on top of alot of fish! Friday morning I meet two fellows Ive never fished before, Guy and JP at 6 am to get an early start. The water level was awesome and the bite was even better. I completely ruined these guys for life. We had over 20 double hook-ups before 1. It was nutes, around 130 fish boated. We saw lots of cookie cutter rainbows and several little football rainbows. The boys literaly had their rods bent all day long! Not to mention it was my birthday so the boys let me catch a few fish as well!

Feeding Fish Foam

So ya'll its official. Its hopper season here in the ozarks. We got green ones, tan ones, yellow ones, brown ones, we got em in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Hopper fishing can be super exciting and action packed on the Little Red. Our fish seem to respond best to these foamy fun flies in the lower flows but not dead low water. Fishing the flies close to the bank along grassy banks. Ive found if I can fish them in a medium to low flow, tight on the bank, with a gravel river bottom my succes rate is higher. I usually dont fish a dropper unless its another dry. They can certainly be a little difficult to cast so down be afraid to shorten your leader a shade. If your experiencing leader twists maybe consider dropping from your normal 5x down to 3 or 4x. These little fellows should be around the river until we get out first few frosts in october so take andvantage of it while you can and feed a fish some foam!

I got the pleasure of guiding a couple of our nation's finest Army fellows last week. The water was low and clear. We slid up river and did some boat fishing that couldnt have been any better then after lunch moved down river with the low water window and waded. sow bugs and soft hackles really seemed to be the ticket almost all day. We caught several nice browns during the day as well as loads of 14-15 inch rainbows. Im positive we caught over a 100 fish. Damon got several good jumps and a nice tug off of this brown to be the icing on his cake, it's his largerst to date!

The Fishing is awesome on the Little Red Right now. We are having an awesome generation schedule. There is wadable water on various spots on the river as well as awesome low water boat fishing all day. The temperature has cooled down a few degrees and the fish are super active. BWO hatches have been going on every afternoon. Fishing are chasing streamers and munching hoppers. This is a photo from a trip I ran on friday of a nice brown caught swinging a soft hackle.

Last week Tony and I ran a group trip. It almost didn't happen due to the weather but about 10 a.m. we got a break,

the clouds parted and we got a chance to go get our lines wet. I had Willie in my boat. The river was full of rainwater and off colored but the fish didnt seem to mind. Willie laid the smack down on them. After boating 25 fish on nymphs he wanted to try streamers. It took a few minutes to get him dailed in. We had several nice browns whack his fly that we didnt land but right before lunch he did land a nice one! After lunch the sun came out and we went back to nymphing and boated quite a few more rainbows and another brown or two. From a morning that didnt seem like we would fish at all it turned out to be stellar!

Yesterday morning I guided a Father and Son, Colin and JH. I've guided a lot of father son combo's but this one was truly inspirational. Colin truly wanted the day to be about JH and it was just so cool to see this dad completely do everything he could to make the day fun for JH. Saturday morning I had two new clients, Karry and Robert. The COE turned the water on early so the water was high and the fish were a little finicky at first, but after some tweaking of the rigs, we found some flies they just couldnt resist. Karrey caught this nice brown and it was icing on the cake for him. The boys had boated close to 50 fish by noon..not to shabby for fishing high water, huh?

Friday I fished with Matthew Owen. We got an early start and wanted to chuck some streamers. We saw gobs of fish and they were willing to eat! I bet we saw 5 fish over 20 inches swing on our fly. We didn't land any monsters but certainly landed a handful of quality fish. As the day went on we decided to switch over to hoppers! Matthew managed to stick foam in quite a few trout! In my opinion fishing streamers and hoppers are two of the most exciting ways to catch trout! What a great day to be on the water!

Amy and I both had the day off yesterday, so we decided we would go pick on a few trout. Well the truth be known she did most of the fishing. I just rowed the boat. I did force feed a fish or two on a hopper and one on a streamer. No monsters but still good fun. Amy fished on them hard and certainly sore lipped quite a few. Her favorite fish on the morning was certainly the nice little brownie taken on a soft hackle!

Sunday and Monday Report

Sunday and Monday I fished a group trip with Jamie. I guided Frank and Tom and Jamie had Herman and Steve. The bite was great. We found the lowest falling water window on the river and got into loads of fish. The river was a zoo all weekend! Yahoo's everywhere, so it was nice to ease up into the lower water and get away from everyone. The bite was HOT! mostly fishing classic nymph rigs.. two flies and a split shot. An attractor with a soft hackle below it has been killer. As the afternoon went on, we had to chase our water window down river. The key is to stay in front of it. If you let the new water hit you, its hard to ever get back in front of it. Remember if you are not getting down you are not going to catch fish!

Friday and Saturday I had the pleasure of guiding a good client of mine and his family, The McWilliams. Friday morning I fished with Mason and his wife, Lena. They did great. We got to fish a stretch of water that I haven't been able to fish much lately and they hammered them! Lena caught her first Brown Trout which was exciting,as well as a couple of nice chunky rainbows! Saturday morning I fished Mason's parents. It was their first time to fly fish and it was pure magic. I bet we had caught 55 fish by noon. They landed 3 nice browns and had doubles on 8 times! It was just crazy good fun!

Summer Time, the livin is easy!

So for the past few weeks the summer livin has been easy! Lots of good fishing and good fun! There's no doubt it's been hot, but the fish have had cool squirts of water on them every day and has kept them active. The river has stayed with a pretty medium flow to it with some windows of lower water. We've been clobbering them on attractors and soft hackles. The streamer bite has been great in periods of low light as well and on occasion fish have been willing to eat a dry. Here are a few pictures of some boys and girls who have been enjoying the summer bite. As we creep into August and September the hopper bite should get great. The higher flows are truly to our advantage if you want to try and fool some fish

on the surface with foam and rubber! In addition, the Hybrids are surfacing on Greers Ferry and feeding hard on threadfin. So, dont forget there is some awesome fishing to be done the rest of the summer!

Voorhies Part Duece

This morning I fished Ryan for a half day, we decided to go fish the lowest water on the river at the Dam. The Corps had said water would be off until noon, Well at 9:19 a.m. they blew the horn and the water started rising. We decided instead of running away from the big water we would just dig our heels in and fight the big water, It turned out to be great. We had lost a few nice rainbows and really wanted a thumper, and a thumper we got. Ryan caught several nice browns this morning and several hefty bows but this 20 incher took the cake! It was an awesome two days on the Little Red, I mean it really doesnt get much better than the fishing has been the past few days with action all over the board!

So today I took Ryan Voorhies ( which means by the river Vies in either French or Dutch, Ryan wasnt exactly sure) out for a little fly fishing adventure. Ryan and his dad fished with me a while back and had an incredible day. I wasn't sure how I could top the time they had but we managed to surpass it! Ryan boated tons of fish nymphing and even crossed a few eyes throwing some dries! I bet he caught 80+ fish today and the icing on the cake was the big ole butter bellied brown! Today I got to take Pierce on a Dry Run Creek adventure...which in case you don't know is probably one of the most amazing pieces of trout water in the country! Its full of trophy fish and the best part about it is its just for kids! Pierce crushed them, he caught loads of healthy fish including a monster bow, some nice browns and some super beautiful cutties. We even got some fish to eat dries, It was just all around a killer day, If you've got a kid you want to get into the sport this is truly the place for them. Don't get me wrong there is lots of fish in the small creek, but they can be extremely smart and picky. If you want to get after them get at me and Ill hook your kid up!

A little Evening Fun

Yesterday evening Amy and I went out for a little fun, we just goofed around in the cool evening river air, listened to some tunes and picked on a few fish. It was absolutely perfect. The fish seemed to be active rising all around us, with several varieties of Mayflies in the air as well as BWO's and even a stray caddis or two. The water had a lazy medium flow which was perfect for some drifting. Amy had a monster fish on at one point but he got away. She did land this nice chunky little bow though to put some icing on the cake!

My boy Ben and his lady Lauren came to fish with me on Monday. Ben usually wants to chase a pig, and he usually catches one but we decided to just make the trip the most enjoyable for Lauren and boat numbers. The fishing was outstanding. Last week I took out a father and son, Robbie and Justin. Justin is a med. student and Robbie is a rancher is Texas. We had some serious fun, had some friendly competition and they ragged each other all day. It was awesome. Not to mention the fishing was great. We fished a sweet low water window in the morning and then dug our heels in the full two units after lunch. Not another boat on the water and we just smacked the fish! Fishing the high water was killer. The fish were fat and angry, plus it doesn't hurt to have over 6,000 cfs pulling the fish away from you too!

Last week was I took Billy and Lisa from Texas out for a day of fishing. They hammered them. We fished the lower water in the a.m. and big two units in the p.m. It was lights out action! Small world stuff, Billy and Lisa went to high school with my mom at Ridgeway in Memphis! It was their 30th wedding anniversary. It was a great day to be on the water, with active fish, mild temps and virtually no one else around! Life is good on the Little Red River!

Yesterday Jamie and I ran a group trip with some boys and I had Terry from Texas and Jamie from Virgina in my boat. The water was big but we managed to be the only ones out there and we caught loads of fish. They were active and feeding strong! The advantage of guiding in the big was is no one really else is out there so we had the river to ourselves. We landed several nice fish including an 18 inch rainbow and this nice brown. Jamie had a nice brown on too but he broke him off at the boat! I don't think it could have been a better day of high water fishing!
